As we continue to make adjustments to RSU57’s Elementary PACE services in alignment with Performance Based Education (PBE) and Mass Customized Learning, our primary goal is to better meet the needs of our students and teachers at all five elementary school locations.
Due to the scope of standards-based learning, our role continually changes in a manner suited for what lies ahead. Instead of a focus on pullout classes, we are gradually moving to a more inclusive, classroom-based service for PACE students. The goal of this change is to create the optimal learning situations for these students. For example, I may give a whole classroom lesson in the area of critical/creative thinking, may team-teach, may tweak lessons, may work with small groups within the classroom, may gather resources, may pull a small group for tech instruction, or may supervise long-term independent studies. This program allows flexibility in the way we meet the needs of gifted potential students.
GT/PACE is more of a “service” than a “program”. Make note that we are looking at student needs vs. wants. This means that our district-wide PBE focus taught by competent teachers are able to meet the intellectual and academic needs of our bright & high achieving students. PACE services those students who either have been nominated and identified through the GT/PACE identification process or are nominated by a teacher for further informal observation and classroom extension. You may view the identification criteria on the district wide GT website.
Occasional Pull-Outs - Highly gifted potential students will be seen independently as the need arises.
Independent Studies / Independent Learning - Some students will be involved in independent work via on-line assignments/ units.
BrainStretch in Residence - GT/PACE service will be available for longer periods of time in a row at a particular school, with the length of time based on student population and needs.
Curriculum Consult - Assisting teachers in extending the curriculum and implementing creative/critical thinking.
Infusion of Geography Bee, Contests and French Classes - as needed
